When looking to brand your garments and accessories with a clothing label, the range of options you have at your disposal can have you doubt what the best choice is.  There are five main clothing label types – woven, printed, leather, embroidered and rubber (PVC/Silicone).  Below we discuss each of these label types to help give you an idea of what kind of label is most suitable for your application and advise you what options you have for each.

woven-labels

Woven Labels

A woven label is most commonly used a neck label, providing an eye catching means of displaying your brand that is a permanent feature of the garment.  Additionally, if produced as a centre fold or manhattan fold label, they can carry important wash and care information on the reverse providing an all-in-one label.

Woven labels are lightweight and durable and most commonly feature on items such as t-shirts, hoodies, knitwear and shirts, though they really are suitable for all types of garments.

Some other uses for woven labels include size labelling and external garment branding in the form of a flag label or as a badge by adding and embroidered or merrowed edge.

The two most popular woven label qualities are damask and satin.   Damask woven labels are the most common choice as they give greater clarity in design for fine text and detailed text and designs.  Satin quality does not offer the same level of detail but provide a smooth, shiny and soft appearance and feel and are most commonly used on more luxury garments.

printed-labels

Printed Labels

With several material choices available, printed labels are suitable for a range of purposes.  Like a woven label, a printed label produced in cotton or polyester satin is suitable to use as a neck label with both providing a soft label that may come into contact with the skin.

Polyester satin labels are occasionally used as a neck label on lightweight garments where a woven label may be too heavy.  However, the most common use for a polyester satin label is as a care label carrying important wash information about the garment.

Cotton labels are sometimes preferred as a neck label where detailed designs are required which can’t be achieved with a woven label, while still offering a soft label.  With cotton labels there is also the option to apply additional processes such as staining and eyeleting.

As well as using as a neck label, cotton labels can be used for external garment branding and as with woven labels, can be produced with a merrowed or embroidered edge to create a printed badge.

leather-labelsLeather Labels

Leather labels are typically used for jeans waistband branding, although they are also a popular choice for external branding of items such as knitwear & coats and accessories such as bags.

For outerwear garments such as coats or jackets, a leather label can be used as an interior neck label combined with a printed cotton size label.

The options available for leather labels include both real and imitation leather, with processes including hot-stamping, printing, cracked effects and attaching metal components such as rivets or decals.

Embroidered Badges & Labels

As with woven and printed badges, embroidered badges are primarily used for external branding of a range of garments and accessories.

Various techniques such as full & partial embroidery, tone-on-tone embroidery and various base materials mean these versatile labels are a popular choice for creating an eye-catching branding label.

Embroidered badges are more durable than printed and woven badges and so are typically chosen for use on outwear garments.  The advantage that embroidered badges offer over printed and woven badges is that they can be created with textured and raised areas to produce a more tactile label and add appeal.

rubber-labelsRubber Labels

Rubber labels (produced in PVC and silicone) are highly durable, eye-catching labels and are suitable for external branding of most types of clothing & accessories including jackets, jeans, footwear and bags.

Silicone is a more environmentally friendly option than PVC and so is often chosen for when used on childrenswear.  However, our PVC passes Phthalate testing requirements and is suitable for all types of garments
